Health visitors from Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust are helping families with children under five lead more active lifestyles by inviting them to take part in a local weekly walk.

The walks organised by the Care Trust aim to encourage families to become more active, reduce isolation and provide an opportunity to meet other parents with young children. Being active is great for mind, body and health; studies have shown that regular walks reduce the long-term risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, strokes and some cancers.

Janine Glendinning, Health Visitor has been instrumental in organising the Trust’s active walk campaign for families in the District.  Janine said: “Walking is ideal for people of all ages and fitness levels who want to be more active. This is a great opportunity for families to get involved in activities with their children that promote speech and language development, attachment and bonding, whilst also encouraging health and exercise.

“Initially the walks will take place in Knowles Park to allow families with children in buggies to walk around the park and older toddlers to access the play area. We have also organised a series of activities for the older toddlers. Lasting around 30 – 45 minutes, the walks will put people well on their way to meeting the recommended daily 10,000 step target. It is never too late to take the first steps to a healthier lifestyle.  Moving more, eating well, drinking less alcohol and becoming smoke free can benefit health right away.

The walks will also provide an opportunity for families to meet with the Trust’s health visitors in an alternative setting, who will be on hand to offer advice and support on healthy eating, exercise, stopping smoking, alcohol consumption and signposting to support services.

Families can take part in the walks, starting on 4 April 2016 and organised by Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust, every Monday 9.30 – 11am (excluding Bank Holidays) at Healthy Lifestyle Solutions, 319 Tong Street, Bradford, BD4 9QY.  For further information on how to get involved please contact the Care Trust’s Health Visiting Team on 01274 221223.
